I can hardly believe it, but this wine is still good, not oxidized. Tannins are gone, so it is just lovely, sweet grape juice. Red fruits predominate. If anyone still has this, I suggest you drink it.

2016 Graff Family Vineyards Consensus

Got just one bottle of this at the discounter. For some reason, I thought the non-Syrah component was grenache. Nope, it was mourvedre. This shows all the tannin of Syrah and mourvedre, and the sauvage flavors of the mourvedre manage to get through. The Syrah character is there--olives, dark fruit, tannin--but the meaty, leathery parts of the mourvedre are also there. This could have used a meal with more fat and stronger flavors. This really grew on us overnight, but I doubt I will find more.

Black raspberry, white pepper, whiff of florals. Nicely mature, though with a swath of firm tannin. Medium full body. Slightly medicinal finish. Good QPR as GO closeout.

2000 Graff Family Vineyards Viognier

Picked up for $4.99 in the hazerai bin at K&L. It's definitely a dark gold/amber, but not unreasonably so for a wine of its age. There's some nutty/rancio character on the nose, but alongside it there's honey, mango, lychee, and some white flowers. This must have been remarkably tropical when young.

On the palate there's still the thick, glycerol texture that one associates with viognier. Brown butter, mango, and a remarkable streak of minerality. The most surprising thing is the acid, which is still there. It's not a high acid wine by any definition, but it feels balanced. Overall, this shocked me by being drinkable, and it's another testament to how wines from the Chalone appellation always overperform for their price point.

A bit past prime but still alive. Fruit fading, acids are moving to the front. Drink up now.

P'n'p and at first it was very frightening. Big hit of VA, and just huge fruit (which VA enhances), perception of overwhelming sweetness. But after a few minutes, things settled down. Then it was good, full of dark berries and a little meatiness, but it fell a little short of the savouriness I love in Mourvedre. If I had to guess, this had a few years left in it. Not a fantastic wine, but an interesting one. Don't see where the lack of tannins comes in--they were there, but the fruit keeps them pretty well covered.

The last (sniff!) bottle of I don't know how many -- 24? -- and this one was a lovely reminder of what this wine used to be. The previous three had made the wine sort of flabby and over-the-hill, but this one was positively pretty again. Drank half, threw half into Patricia Wells' "Gardiane La Camargue."

Very good QPR on this one. Fully mature and at peak. Rhone blend is less forward and fruity than a typical CDR, more restrained than a lot of Cali blends too. The half-decade of cellaring worked well.

Delicious wine. Vanilla, oak, maybe some cedar. Strong graphite and hints of berries. This is an amazingly well balanced wine. Smooth, rich, and long on the palate.

We thought this wine was a tremendous for the price. Really surprised at how low the ratings of some of the previous reviews are, but to each his own.

We had this with ribeye steaks in the pairing could not have been better. The wine is quite heavy, with very strong, bold well-balanced flavors. We got ripe berries, vanilla, and cedar as the three most dominant flavors. There was a little cocoa and earthiness as well, but both were quite muted.

The wine was well balanced, just the right tannins, and long on the finish. In the glass, it is a dark garnet color and has legs that wouldn't quit.

All in all an exceptionally pleasing wine.

Very deep inky garnet with bricking. Nice nose of plums, black cherries, a bit of creosote. Acid balance on the palate is somewhat sprightly, but definitely not juicy or tart. Age shows its hand in a good way. Flavors show a cooked aspect. Finish is short and, well, short, with light grip and low tannins. No one thought that I would still be drinking this Graff Family bottle 7 years after harvest. It's interesting, yes, and definitely drinkable, but the basis here was not much to start with. So it's interesting but that's about all.

But a strong 87. In a way it's never shown better than it's showing now. It struck us as more concentrated than we remember -- there's real heft here in terms of palate-weight; soft but grittily textured tannins. Inky maroon in color initially, it seemed somehow to all of us blacken as the night went on. Blueberries and some meat. Would serve a rich & meaty dish well.

Decanted 1 hr. ahead. Very deep garnet with some brick-brown touches. Nice nose of black pepper, plums, black cherries, smoke. A little less interesting on the palate, as low acidity jumps up at first. The soft texture of this wine reminds me of the old Gallo Hearty Burgundy, and I don't mean that as a critique (probably GHB had some mourvedre in it). This wine is smooth, rich, and a bit simple, but good & drinkable. Finishes with low grip and zero tannins.

This is not necessarily my kinda thing -- but it punches at or above its weight for sure. Best an hour in -- smooth, silky, with spices you could be forgiven for calling Indian. Two hours in it gets a bit hot (the 14.8 abv suddenly registers). Has acidity but lacks spine and bite. (Not flabby and unstructured, but not a well-built wine, either.) A solid mid-week lasagna play.

Okay, I don't give much weight to people who give points and no comments, but something about that review hits me wrong, too. Was the wine in a dumb phase in November 2012, or was it at the wrong temp? Was there just bottle variation? We had this side-by-side with a more expensive Cote Rotie (because all Cote Rotie costs more than this). The Graff wasn't my wine of the night, but it was better than good (because all non defective wines are now better than good, which means they are all above average--welcome to Lake Wobegon). This had nice ripe Syrah flavors without being cloying or jammy, the acids were present but balanced. Not super gamy, but neither was the C-R. It was a little weak in the tannins, at least to my taste in Syrah--I like some backbone. But I've paid more and not been as happy, and if the basic Qupe was sitting next to this, I'd take this. Both the women in our quartet liked this better than the C-R, and both have good palates. Your results may vary, as they say.
